In the late 1920s, Lew Stoner and Robert Winther purchased the Western Fishing Rod Company in San Francisco and formed the Winston Rod Company. Within a few years the Winston Company was famous for making incredible bamboo fly rods. Working alongside members from the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club, Lew introduced a hollow-fluted bamboo rod construction that revolutionized rod-making. Like fellow rod designer E.C. Powell, Lew helped push California into the forefront of innovative tackle design during the 1930s and 40s.
