In the 1940s and 50s, Santa Cruz’s San Lorenzo River was a zoo of steelhead and silver salmon fishermen. Among the noted names were Lou and Elmer Murelli, Scorp Lee Evans and George Zamlich Sr.; each an accomplished angler and veteran member of the coastal fraternity. One of the oldest and most knowledgeable anglers was George Zamlich Sr., the originator of the Zamlich special. George was an excellent fly tier, good friend of Jack Horner and father to three generations of Zamlich fly fishermen.
