Two salmon bills coming out of the House and Senate

Two salmon bills are coming out of the house and senate, each claim to protect rivers and watersheds currently supporting strong runs of Pacific Salmon. At first glance, the two bills seem similar but upon further review, Senate Bill S.817 the Pacific Salmon Stronghold Conservation Act of 2009 seems to be the bill with enough weight behind it to actually do something.

According to The Wild Salmon Center, The Pacific Salmon Stronghold Act of 2009 will establish a federal program to support protection and restoration of a network of the healthiest remaining wild Pacific salmon ecosystems in North America - “Salmon Strongholds.” These Salmon strongholds will sustain core centers of wild salmon abundance, productivity and diversity, reflecting a basic principle of conservation biology: protect the best, first.

This act will complement efforts to recover threatened and endangered stocks by directly supporting public-private incentive-based efforts to maintain strong “seed” stocks, sustaining the economic, ecological, cultural, and health benefits of Wild Pacific salmon for future generations.

Restore rule to Endangered Species Act

Thanks to the over 600 people who made it out for the Santa Rosa showings of Rivers of a Lost Coast. The Rialto Cinemas Lakeside made the two-day event a memorable experience for everyone involved.

AP writer Josef Hebert reports, the Obama administration has reversed a rule change made in the waning days of the Bush administration. Federal agencies will once again be required to consult wildlife biologsts and environmental experts with plans and projects that may affect threatened and endangered species. Proponents of the rule reversal are pleased with the decision, which re-instates another layer of protection for endangered and threatened species. Opponents believe the Obama’s administration recent decision adds another unnecessary layer of red-tape and added expenses to projects already struggling to stay afloat.

Santa Rosa showings tonight and tomorrow plus this year’s salmon season finalized.

Don’t forget tonight and tomorrow (4/27, 4/28) Rivers of a Lost Coast will be playing at the Rialto Cinemas Lakeside off of Summerfield Rd in Santa Rosa, CA. The film will be playing at 4:30 and 7:00 pm both nights. Tickets are available at the Rialto Box office. Get to the Rialto early, a strong attendance is expected.

Matt Weiser of the Sacramento Bee reported today,

“The California Fish and Game Commission on Tuesday ruled that fishing will be allowed only on the Sacramento River between Knights Landing and the Lower Red Bluff Boat Ramp, and only between Nov. 16 and Dec. 31. Anglers may keep only one salmon per day and possess only one at any time.

All other areas of the Sacramento River and its tributaries, including the American and Feather rivers, are closed to salmon fishing.

The commission also affirmed a closure of commercial salmon fishing in all ocean waters off the California coast, in accord with a previous decision by the Pacific Fisheries Management Council. It approved a limited recreational ocean catch, as well as a limited recreational season on the Klamath and Trinity rivers.”

Sold out in Sacramento, get to Santa Rosa early!

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the Crest and Rialto Elmwood Theatres this past week. The Rivers of a Lost Coast team would like to apologize to those who were turned away at the door at last night’s Sacramento sell-out. We will be showing in Sacramento again later this summer and will let you know the date and location on the “showings” page of our website.

This upcoming Monday and Tuesday we will be in Santa Rosa, CA. where we are expecting some of our largest crowds. The Rialto Cinemas Lakeside is located at 551 Summerfield Rd. Showtimes are 4:30 and 7:00 pm. Tickets are not available online but are on sale now at the Rialto box office. We are strongly recommending picking up tickets early or arriving at the theatre well in advance for both of the 7:00 pm showings.

We are in the process of securing dates for three North Coast showings and will let everybody know shortly.
