Trinity River restoraton projects moving forward

According to John Driscoll of the Eureka Times-Standard, the first wave of restoration efforts brought on by the 2000 U.S. Interior Secretary’s decision to cut back on water diversions to the Sacramento River and improve fish habitat, are nearing completion. Known as the Trinity River Restoration Program, much of the work has focused on large scale, flood plain restoration. The TRRP is scheduled to begin work on the first of the final six sites in the upper river this summer.

The Times-Standard’s Driscoll reports, “Restoration Program Executive Director Mike Hamman said that once the first phase of the mechanical restoration effort is done next year, information collected on the sites will be closely examined to determine how to move forward with the second phase.”

Some advocates for the River including Brian Leydecker of Friends of the Trinity River are concerned the projects have been too grand in scale and haven’t focused enough on the smaller tributaries used by endangered Coho salmon.

Many involved with the project are concerned about the project’s effectiveness. Much of the work done is meant to deal with high-flow discharge, something that hasn’t happened on the Trinity since 2006.
