Bill’s Legacy
So it is apparent, as it was during the production of the film, that Bill Schaadt has dominated the conversation. As threads, blogs and message boards turn people to the site, questions about this almost mythical angler have increasingly found their way into our inbox.
For the most part, the questions are simple, direct. Where can I find out more about him? How did he make a living? How can he be considered to be the greatest fly fisherman? The last, a claim we ourselves have tried to avoid, and a question we could never answer.
As it was during the three years of production, what continues to amaze us about Bill are not the stories of his fanatical obsessions, of fishing off freeways, sleeping in his boat, or his celebration of dis-guarded, half broken flyrods. Rather, it is the permanent influence he left on so many great anglers. This January will mark the fourteenth year of his passing. Long after he left the river, he continues to bring anglers to tears, to frothing stories of unimaginable antics, to infuriating rages about his selfish manner and “do-anything-attitude” to be in the fish.
